April 2020 IWSG: Stay in Your Shell

On a good day, my issues with anxiety, germs, etc. remind me of children playing hide-and-seek. They dart from shadowy corners to poke my nerves with sticky fingers, giggling all the while. Annoying, but manageable.

Now, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, those same issues are tantrum-throwing hooligans, hopped up on sugar, bouncing on the bed like it’s a trampoline, laughing maniacally at the top of their lungs.

So, I act like the mother I would've been if I had children (human children, not hard-shelled ones. Besides, the tortoises know better than to jump on the bed), and I ignore them. Head down, I write.

Not too long ago, writing had become a struggle. Now, writing is saving me. My creepy tales are actually providing some light in my darkness. I focus on small projects like flash fiction – easier to hold the story in my head – and ones with upcoming deadlines to keep me on task. I'm considering a bigger project, keeping the attitude and the plan loose, seeing what develops. And I'm going to try some brainstorming sessions, get weird and wild on the page.

I still have bad moments, bad days. My freak-outs are freakier than usual (just ask my poor husband!) But I'm doing what I can to hold it all together and right now, that's enough.

All of us here at TSR are sending good thoughts and prayers your way. And, in the words of the tortoises (okay, so they say it with their eyes) –

** Stay safe. Stay well. **
* Stay in your shell. *

How are you all doing? Are you writing? What's one positive thing you can share, something you're grateful for? Not big picture like health, but on a smaller scale - a great book you read, an excellent movie you watched, a new recipe you tried, a night sky full of stars you don't normally look at - that kind of thing.

Time Off for Creative Behavior

It's time for the April session of Camp NaNo, and I am ready to go! I'm wearing my Camp NaNo t-shirt and my Minion pajama pants. I've packed all the necessary supplies - Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, wine, a giant flashlight that serves double duty - it's bright enough to illuminate all the dark corners of the woods (and of my mind) and it's heavy enough to thwack monsters, stunning them so I can run away screaming for help from either the tortoises or my husband.

And I've got a story draped over my imagination much like Spanish moss. It's been clinging to me for so long now that I've lost track of how many drafts it's gone through. But enough is enough. Writing this novella/novel is my fight of 2018, and April is the next round. Who - or what - will emerge at the end of this month?

"Because after all,
isn't writing a novel
a survival story of its own?"
(Kathleen McCleary)

I'm pretty sure I'll make it - having gained a few pounds and lost a few more marbles. I think the story will survive - bloody and twisted. As for some of the characters, well, let's just say they really could've used that heavy duty flashlight to fight back against the baddies. Not that it would've done much good . . . .

Mwahaha!

Will you be going to Camp this month? Participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge? Undertaking some other creative project? Good luck to us all!

Since I'll be busy wandering around the deep, dark woods, weeping into my Reese's Peanut Butter Cups while wondering why I thought being a writer was a good idea, I'm taking a blogging break for April. I'll be popping in and out - as long as the flashlight works - but no new posts until May's IWSG.

Recommended Reading - April

It was a fantastic month for reading! Three of the six books I read this month are what I consider Standouts. I love when that happens!

*****

Books Read in April:  6

Total Books Read in 2013:  26

Standouts:

Close My Eyes by Sophie McKenzie - make a note of this book or reserve it at your library NOW. It doesn't come out until July 2013 but it's going to be big. If you enjoyed Before I Go to Sleep, Into the Darkest Corner and/or Gone Girl, definitely check this one out. I had to suspend belief a little more than I care to in a few spots, but the underlying tension and sweeping suspense carried me through.

(I received an ARC of this from BookBrowse for an unbiased review.)

***

The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell - here's another one to add to your list or to request as soon as possible since it comes out next week. This is historical suspense at its best! The closer I got to the end, the more I wanted to read the pages peeking through my fingers - I had a pretty good idea of what was about to happen but I had to see it through, no matter what.

(I received an ARC through Goodreads for an unbiased review.)

***

Wool by Hugh Howey - I read the Omnibus (Wool #1-5) and was totally unprepared for how much I enjoyed this and wanted more, more, more! I felt like I was reading a sci-fi Stephen King tale. Even if science fiction isn't usually your thing - it's not really mine, either - I would still thoroughly recommend this. The characters are probably what made me enjoy this as much as I did.

Has anyone read any of the Standouts? What did you think? Do you plan on reading any or all of them? What are you reading and loving lately?

The Off The Shelf Challenge: April

Some of you might recall how I blogged last month about my abysmal progress in The Off The Shelf Challenge. Yeah, well, April wasn't much better. I started a handful of books . . . that I ended up putting down. I did actually read a number of books . . . but most of them weren't from my shelf or already on my TBR list so they don't count for the Challenge. I really need to get cracking. Watch out, May!

Challenge Books read in January:  4
Challenge Books read in February:  5
Challenge Books read in March:  1 (Still hanging my head in shame...)

Challenge Books read in April:  2

Standouts from April include:

Chomp by Carl Hiassen - this wasn't on my OTS Challenge list but I couldn't resist this middle grade/young adult romp through the Everglades that includes an animal wrangler, a reality TV show "survivalist," air boats, and enough interesting and funky animals and information to fill the Everglades themselves. And Carl Hiassen is one of the few writers who can get away with calling two of the characters "Wahoo" and "Tuna." This is a fun read for all ages but if you know a boy who likes to read - or one who isn't all that crazy about it - give them Chomp. But if they end up wanting to wrestle alligators or handle snakes or become a TV reality show star, don't blame me.
