Motivational Monday Quote

"FIND WHERE YOUR PASSION MEETS THE MARKET"
(Rachelle Gardner)

This is what literary agent, Rachelle Gardner, says she often tells her clients, and I think it's one of the best pieces of advice re: a writing career that I've ever heard.  She goes on to say this -

"I’m not saying my clients should “sell out” and “write to the market” but I’m acknowledging that if they want to sell, they need to be looking for ways that the writings of their heart will connect with others and have a chance of selling."

Her words give me hope that my novels will one day find a home, that as long as my stories ring real and true to me, they will some how, some way, some day ring like that for others, too.

It's all about faith, baby.  It's all about faith.

Inspiration at the Beach

I just got home from the South Carolina Writers Workshop conference and let me just say, I am inspired.  Now, I learned a lot from the critique I received and from the workshops I attended, but it was two women - Rachelle Gardner and Joshilyn Jackson - in particular who re-lit the fire for fiction in my gut.

I've followed literary agent Rachelle Gardner's blog for awhile now, even linked over there a few times here at The Shellshank Redemption, so I was very excited to meet her and learn from her in person.  She didn't disappoint.  Her workshop, "First Lines, First Paragraphs, First Pages: How to Create a Terrific Opening," was excellent.  Those beginnings are what draw readers in, are what makes them want to read more.  She talked about how "voice" can't be taught, how it must be found.  It's the expression of "you" on the page and it takes courage to put it there.  Everything she said clicked, and I came away from the class excited about stories and their telling.

Joshilyn Jackson's newest book, Backseat Saints, was on my to-be-read list anyway, but when I saw she was going to be at the conference, I bumped it up.  I wish I had read it sooner, like the moment I left the store with it.  I wish I had read all of her books sooner.  I bought her first one at the conference, read it, loved it.  She is that good.  (If it sounds like I'm gushing, it's because I am.)  Her workshop, "Headspace & Heartspace: Writing is Not a Business, Publishing is Not an Art," reminded me why I write and how I can write better.  Write the book only I can write and write it to the best of my ability; write what matters to me and be true to it.  I don't have room here for all the great things she said (now, she should write a book on writing!), but one particular piece rang so true it stilled me inside - give up the idea that publishing a book is the goal.  The real goal is to be a novelist and any work done toward that goal is worth it and is not a waste of time.  Amen.  Just...amen.

Okay, I'm done gushing and being a groupie...for the moment.

Motivational Monday!

Here it is, the last week of September.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready for October - cooler weather (fingers crossed!) and a crispness to the air.  I'm also looking forward to November - whoo-hoo, NaNoWriMo!  But before we get to those things, let's get this week off to a good start...

Literary agent Nathan Bransford wrote his 1000th post and had a fun contest to celebrate it.

Over on Rachelle Gardner's blog, she wrote "10 Ways to Annoy a Literary Agent" BUT she titled the comments "Ways to Annoy a Writer."  I laughed out loud at some of them and nodded wholeheartedly at others.  Good stuff all around.

I'm going to toot my own horn here and remind everyone the Hint Fiction Anthology comes out this November.  Hmm, maybe I'll do a little giveaway here in November...but then again, maybe I won't.  Don't take that chance!  Pre-order it now. :)

Have a great day and a wonderful week!

Motivational Monday!

August feels like it's creeping by but I'm not buying it.  I'm racing to write, revise, and polish a project before a September 1st deadline.  August 31st is looming!  I can see it and it's already making me nervous...wait, stop.  This is Motivational Monday, not Moaning Monday.  Okay, so here goes -

Agent Rachelle Gardner's post, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, is about how she decided not to "record" her family vacation but to "experience" it instead.  A good read for all of us considering "unplugging" for a bit.

I loved the post, "Lost" and The High Narrative Price of WTF, by agent Nathan Bransford.  This is for readers, writers, die hard "Lost" fans and those of us who gave up somewhere in the first few seasons.  It's about what happens when you tease the reader/viewer with a WTF moment borrowed from the end of a story but then don't deliver on it.  Really good stuff here.  (In case you didn't know, WTF means "What the F***?" or, according to Phil, from the TV show "Modern Family" - you're a fan of the show, right?  If not, you should be! - it can also mean "Why The Face?")

And I just want to say thanks again for everyone who emailed or commented about my interview over at WOW! Women on Writing.  I really appreciate it.

And now, back to work...

Motivational Monday!

Here are some good news items from last week to jumpstart the good stuff for this week:

Literary agent Rachelle Gardner posted How to Become a Better Writer:  11 Completely Non-Writing-Related Ideas.  My favorite is "Be Creative Any Way You Can" - this includes building something with Legos!  In the comments section of that post, someone mentioned that these were good ideas not only for writing, but also for life.  I couldn't agree more!  Go check them out for a positive boost.

Stacy Post won a Versatile Blogger Award.  Congratulations, Stacy!

As for myself, I found out that Referential Magazine accepted my story, "Rooted in the Past" for publication!  And, since I will then have two stories up over there, I'll get my own Contributor's page.  Yeh!  I'll do a post when the story is up and ready for reading.

Have a good week, everyone!  Let's keep up the momentum!
