Pass the Popcorn, Please!

I love a good scary movie, but because I am a giant chicken, I rarely venture out to the theaters to watch them. I much prefer curling up on the couch with popcorn, my husband nearby, and the remote control in my hand so I can press "pause" if I get too freaked out.

(Believe me, this works out well for everyone concerned. No one wants to hear me scream or watch me weep from terror. Even the tortoises roll their eyes at me - okay, it at least looks like they're rolling their eyes - before tucking themselves safely away in their shells.)

So, even though my chicken-ness means I have to wait for movies to be available to rent, I was still very excited to come across this article "Over 30 Horror Movies We Can't Wait to See in 2019" over on the Bloody Disgusting website. My Movies-to-Watch list is growing almost as fast as my Books-to-Read list! (Pfft. Not even close.)

I haven't watched any trailers yet, so my picks are based on other things -

For Stephen King fans - it's Pet Sematary 2019 versus Pet Sematary 1989! I remember loving the book, but I can't remember if I liked the movie. I'll probably give the new one a shot. I also want to see In the Tall Grass, which is based on a novella written by King and his son, Joe Hill. I will, however, skip IT: Chapter Two since I didn't really enjoy Chapter One.

Speaking of sequels - and remakes - I'm looking forward to Annabelle 3 and Grudge.

And I have high hopes for: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Body at Brighton Rock and The Lighthouse. Oh, and Midsommar by Ari Aster. Aster's movie, Hereditary, left me haunted for a good long while, so this new one should be - fingers crossed! - amazing.

Time to stock up on popcorn! And peanut M&Ms . . . and pizza . . . and wine. . . .

Do you like scary movies? Have any favorites? What about them makes them your favorites? Anything here - or anything else from the linked article  - sound good to you? (I have notes of more but couldn't list them all!)

  1. I remember the older Pet Sematary - I thought it was awful. The new one can only be better.
Definitely looking forward to the second half of It.
And yes, I dig a good scary movie, the key word being good.

    1. I really wanted to like the first half of IT, and I was so disappointed when I didn't.

  2. I can't watch scary movies. I relive them far too long afterward.
Something not scary but with morgue humor is the tv series, Dead Like Me. It was refreshingly original. I think it's free on Amazon Prime.

    1. It's funny because some scary stuff sticks with me, but others not so much. I still have not been able to watch a full season of American Horror Story - something about the music, the stories, etc absolutely freaks me out. I'm determined to try again though. :)

  3. I have to have my afgan to watch scary movies with. It has the proper amount of holes to look through to alleviate the scary. That said, I also do not go see scary movies in theaters. LOL

I'll have to check out the scary movie list. I love having a watch list. It saves time looking when I have a moment to watch something.

    1. Hmm, a blanket with holes for scary movie watching sounds like a product in the making, kind of like a Snuggie. :)

Yeh for lists! Although, I find my Movies-to-Watch list often gets shorter after I watch the trailers.

  4. LOL. I used to love scary movies, but since I'm the mom who has to worry about everyone, I don't like them anymore. Have fun with the popcorn.

    1. I'm able to separate - compartmentalize? - my real anxieties and fears from the things I watch on TV or in movies. Not always, though, and not to the fullest degree. That would be too easy!

  5. I've been avoiding scary movies for the most part, especially if they have monsters or chain saws or dogs like Cujo (which still gives me cold chills after all these years). I do enjoy a good ghost story...and psychological suspense...and thrillers with a great villain. The Pet Sematary book freaked me out a little, so I never saw the first movie. I think I'll skip the 2119 version as well. After all these years and all the movies I've seen, I still think the scariest one of all was Deliverance. That banjo music...

    1. I really like ghost stories and psychological suspense, too. I also like when you don't see the ghost/creature/monster for a good long while or even at all. I haven't seen Deliverance in a long time, but I remember being utterly chilled.

  6. I don't do scary movies. They don't really scare me too much while I watch them, but the nightmares I get freak me out.

    1. My nightmares often come not from the scary movies but from the weirdest, silliest so-not-scary scenarios. Leave it to my brain. Sigh.

  7. I'm too much of a chicken even for rentals. Enjoy your movies!

  8. I love scary movies. I think The Sixth Sense is my all-time favorite. I'm looking forward to Glass, even though the reviews say it sucks and I'm not overly surprised. He's never again come close to the brilliance of The Sixth Sense.

I couldn't stand the reboot of It and have no idea why so many people gave its blatant sexist and racist revisions a pass. I won't be watching part two either.

As for Pet Semetary, it was great back in the day, but it hasn't aged well.

    1. I loved The Sixth Sense, too. I did like Split, but I don't care so much about seeing Glass.

I re-watched the TV miniseries of IT not too long ago and that did not age well either.

I think you did a post awhile back listing horror movies? And I'm pretty sure you had Creep on there? It was good and twisted! :) (The second one? Not so much.)

    2. Aw, there's still a lot of that miniseries I love. It's a sentimental favorite. I love the actors who played the kids a lot more, for instance, and thought they were truer to the novel. And Tim Curry as Pennywise? The best. No one would go near the new version--he has no charisma; he's just scary AF. Think they missed the point.

I have written posts with horror movie line-ups, but I haven't seen Creep. It's been forever since I've watched scary movies. I was on a tear for a while, but in the past year it's been true-crime docs.

    3. Even though I don't think the miniseries as a whole aged well, I totally agree about the kids and Tim Curry! :)

  9. I'm not one for watching scary movies, though I might have to make an exception for Grudge. The Grudge was the first date I had with my husband fifteen years ago. Good grief, how time flies.

    1. Were you pretending to be brave back then, hoping to impress him? :)

Apparently, this new version of Grudge is supposed to be very different.

  10. I used to be the horror movie queen until I had a kid. I still like creepy and supernatural films, but more on the psychological rather than the gory and in-your-face kind. I remember the old Pet Sematary. I do wonder if Gage (the toddler) will be just as eerie or will they zombie him too much in the new one?

    1. I finally watched part of the new Pet Sematary trailer, and the thing that stays with me the most is the creepy pounding of the drums.... Shudder!

(I usually only watch part of a movie trailer to see if I like it enough to give it a shot.) :)

  11. Most scary movies scare me too much, but I did see Pet Cemetery in 1989 because I went with my boyfriend at the time, my best friend, and my cousin who was trying to hit on my best friend by "helping" her during the frightening moments of the movie. I wasn't scared during the movie because I was so annoyed at my cousin. Thankfully, my friend laughed at the movie and at my cousin and I intervened - spilled popcorn and soda on purpose, anyone? Oops, didn't mean to trip on you when I left the row and then again, when I came back ... Yes, a night of purposeful misdirection that kept me from watching the movie enough to be scared.

  12. I love both scary movies and the pause button, but it takes a lot and I mean a lot to scar me. I watch slashers, creature features, all of it, and they are either crazy funny or shocking--not scary.

My favs are: A Quiet Place, Mama, The Ring + Grudge 1.

    1. I don't know what I would do without that pause button!

I liked A Quiet Place, but I think it could've been better. It might have been all the hype around it though. Maybe I was just expecting too much.

  13. I hate watching scary movies and don't attempt it often. I did manage to make it through A Quiet Place, though. I wouldn't even attempt It because clowns terrify me even when they're not out of a Stephen King novel.

  15. I grew up on Stephen King movies. Seriously, my first movie memory is Carrie, and I had to only be 5, if that. I loved the new It. My younger sister had her eyes closed most of the movie, so we're probably going to have to watch it again lol. She, my other sister, and my mom have read the book. It's so long, though, I don't know if I will.

I didn't know another Pet Sematary was coming out; I'll have to see it, too.

    1. I grew up on Stephen King BOOKS. (Explains a lot, doesn't it?) I loved IT, the book. I do tend to enjoy King's books more than the movies, although some of the movies are excellent, like Stand By Me (The Body) and The Shawshank Redemption (Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption) and The Green Mile. I liked Carrie, too. And Cujo. And.... :)

  16. I hate scary movies. I stopped watching them a long time ago because I'd rather my head be filled with something else. I do enjoy a good suspense though!

  17. It's funny, but even though I may enjoy reading a good horror story, I'm not too keen on watching them onscreen. I HATE slasher-type movies, which is what a lot of horror flicks end up being these days. Used to be, the so-called "special effects" were so bad and the situations so outlandish, horror flicks were almost funny. The more realistic the movies became, the less I liked them. I may have groaned and shuddered while reading King's books, but I kept on reading. Now, I prefer a good thriller.

    1. I'll watch the occasional slasher-type movie, but they're not my go-to for scary stuff. I prefer things like Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity or The Conjuring - less gore, more creep. :)

  18. I am too much of a chicken to watch scary movies. Last one I watched that I remember is Cape Fear, while on vacation on Cape Fear! That was over twenty years ago!
