King's Speech: Z is for tmZ

Regular readers of The Shellshank Redemption know how much I enjoy a good quote (see Motivational Mondays) and that I’m a huge fan of Stephen King (see the King of All Days Part I and Part II.) So, for the 2013 A-Z Challenge, I decided to combine the two, using some of my favorite King quotes about reading, writing and life in general. Enjoy!

*****

I think there ought to be some serious discussion
by smart people, really smart people,
about whether or not the proliferation of things like The Smoking Gun
and tmZ and YouTube and the whole celebrity culture is healthy.
(Stephen King)

I’m at the point in my life where, when I look at things online, I don’t know half the people who are talked about…and I don’t care. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy TV (The Walking Dead – obsess much?) and movies and a few magazines, but my days of knowing who wore what and who dated who are waaaaay over. And I’m glad. But I didn’t free up that mind space for current events or politics or controversy. I fill it with more books, with creativity and imagination and art and play, with self-improvement, with learning.

I don’t consider myself one of those “really smart people” who should make the call regarding celebrity culture. I just know what’s right for me, what works for me, what I need to keep growing and improving.

  2. Like you, I don't keep up with all the famous folks. Books are more fun!

  3. J.L. - thank you!

Donna - most of the famous people I "stalk" are writers. :)

  4. A good way to end the A to Z - focusing on what's most important.

Thanks for a great month of posts.

  5. I've never paid attention to who is dating who. (I don't think most guys really care.) But I do know my pop culture and just enough news to be informed without overwhelmed.

  7. I have SO enjoyed your King quotes and your thoughts, Madeline! And yeah, I know what you mean--I read about celebrity birthdays and think, "Who ARE these people???" :-)

(Just in case my comments aren't coming through--I keep getting an ID Error-- I'm switching to Google so you'll know I was here.) ;-)

  8. I'm not much of a celebrity follower at all. I could care less about the award shows too. Nothing like a bunch of millionaires congratulating each other to make me gag. And I've never read a book by a celeb and never will.

  9. Barbara - I'm glad you enjoyed the posts this month. I hope you'll continue to visit us here at TSR!

Alex - I think that's the trick, to be informed but not overwhelmed.

    Mama J - :)

Cathy C - Thank you so much! And I still don't know who the Kardashians are...

Susan - I used to watch all the award shows when I was younger. Now, when the commercials announce who's appearing on the show, I have little to no idea who they are.

  10. I don't care about celebrity culture either. I'd much rather know about the latest breakthroughs in science. Congrats of finishing the a to z challenge!

  11. I'm right there with you on celebrity culture. I know I'm old because I barely know who any of the "it people" are anymore.

Congrats on finishing the Challenge, Madeline! I thought your theme was so creative and fun. :)

  15. LOL. Celebrity culture is a waste of time. I'd rather be out living, er, creating too. ;)

Great quote--and I'm so glad I met you through this hop!

    Crystal - I'm glad I met you, too. :)

  17. I'm not above a bit of celebrity gossip though I don't actively seek it out. It's all grist to the mill of inspiration. They are human, after all!

  18. Nick - believe me, I know some celebrity news and trivia myself - just not a lot of it. :)

  19. Yeah I don't care much about the celebrity stuff either.. Not really my thing. I like the thought of you filling your life with creativity and books instead :)
