I believe there's an honesty, a sincerity, to truly good fiction. It's not always pretty - actually, it's often dark and disturbing - but if the writer lets loose that truth, no matter how ugly, inside herself/himself, it will ultimately be born into the story and carried by the characters. It will bleed through the page and the words. It will stain the fingers, then the mind and the heart of the reader. If we do it right. If we let ourselves do it right.
