Motivational Monday

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.
THE WORD ITSELF SAYS
'I'M POSSIBLE'!
(Audrey Hepburn)

For some people, Fall feels like an ending - to warm days at the beach or pool, to cool evenings sitting around a campfire, to vacations, to gardening, to more peaceful (maybe), quality family time.

Now, I love the Fall. It really doesn't make any sense why I do. Our weather in FL doesn't get cooler until October, so there's no nip in the air until then. We don't have kids so there's no back to school excitement in our house (although, all the sales on school/office supplies thrill me!) The "snowbirds" start flocking back for the next 5-6 months, increasing noise and traffic and crowds everywhere. And as whispery and rustling as the palm fronds are, they don't turn gorgeous colors.

But here's the thing - for me, Fall doesn't feel like an ending; it feels like a beginning. A sense of starting over, of newness, of rebirth and renewal. I am filled with hope. Suddenly, I can breathe again.

We all have so much to look forward to. It's okay to mourn the Summer, but let's look with joy to all that's ahead. I'm looking forward to working on new writing projects, to celebrating birthdays and holidays, to bike rides and walks on the beach with my husband.

What are you looking forward to this Fall? What fills with you joy just thinking about it?

  1. Yeah--that beginning thing is big. It may even be a hang-back from being students ourselves, eh? I think though, you've spotted another of my quibbles about fall. You mentioned the return of the snowbirds. HERE it is the return of the college students. University of Michigan has 25,000 of them--it makes my town feel crowded and tight, where in the summer there is room to spread out. And I work at the U, so my job picks up pace. Still... while life outside irritates me more, it REMAINS a good time for me to start stuff.

    1. I definitely think it has to do with when we were students ourselves. I used to look forward to going back to school more than I would be upset that summer was over. Once a geek, always a geek.... :)

  2. I like that quote. I never looked at the word like that.

I'm kind of in the opposite place as Hart...I love Labor Day weekend because it means the bulk of the tourists have gone home or are going home, and for two glorious weeks it's possible to walk down the aisles of the grocery store.

Then the leaves start changing color and everyone comes back again. But those two weeks are great.

    1. I'd never thought about the word like that either.

It's funny because we get tourists in the summer, too, but that number ebbs and flows. Besides, they mostly go to Orlando, etc. It's more the Fall/Winter when there's a steady/consistent crowd in our area.

      Enjoy your two weeks! :)

  3. I also love September, also because I loved school from both a student's and a teacher's perspective. New beginnings...plus here in NC, a relief from the heat and humidity of summer, cooler nights, and a slow change to the wonderful colors of fall. I'm with you!

    1. I thought you'd say winter. Aren't you already counting down the days until Christmas? :)

  5. I'm excited to teach again! And I'm exciting to see the end of one writing project at the end of this week and the beginning of another. We get the fall leaves to go crunch walking in and the rain that creates good stomping puddles, so I'm looking forward to those too. :) Thank you for the joyful post!

  6. Fall is my favorite time of year by far. I hate summer because I burn so easily that the sun is not my friend, plus I hate the heat and humidity. I love when the temps cool down and the sun is no longer out until 10:00 at night. I know the shorter days are hard for some people but I am just the opposite. I also love wearing long sleeves and long pants! I'm so pale I could be mistaken for a vampire so I hate summer clothes LOL. I'm always happy to turn the calendar over to September. :)

    1. I'm one of those people who don't care if it stays lighter longer into the evening. I'd much rather it be lighter earlier in the morning so I'm not getting up in the dark. :)

  7. I do think we associate fall with a new beginning because of back to school. It starts from a young age. I'm in Tennessee and it stays warm through October here, too. When I was younger it was cooler in the fall. Still, the sun is just at a different angle in October and there's something cool about that!
