YOU NEED TO SWITCH FROM THINKING,
"I'VE GOT TO WRITE THIS BOOK"
TO
"I GET TO WRITE THIS BOOK."
IT'S A PRIVILEGE, SOMETHING YOU'RE CALLED TO DO.
AND YOU SHOULD TREAT IT LIKE ONE.
(Michael Hyatt, from an interview on Jeff Goins Blog)
I remind myself of this quote every time I . . .
- stare at a blank page or screen
- think dusting or doing laundry would be more productive
- am hurt when other people don't bother asking about something so important to me
- open another rejection in my inbox
- think I should just give up
To be able to tell stories or write poems or songs, to create fabulous meals or photos or art, to move your body in dance or sport, to take on a whole new persona on stage or screen, are some of the greatest, lasting gifts bestowed on us and which we then pass on to the world.
So when others don't get it or don't see it, when we forget it, let's remember, and let's remind ourselves and each other, this week and always.
Another great post. I'm going to say this to myself next time I get a rejection...
ReplyDeleteCreativity is a gift and a joy.
ReplyDeleteSimon - it really is quite the mind shift. :)
ReplyDeleteAlex - absolutely!
thanks, madeline! oh, and dusting is NEVER more valuable than writing so warn me before you come over!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this one! I never thought of it this way but it's so true. Writing has been one of the best things that's ever happened in my life.
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday to you, Madeline!
Tara - there are a lot more things more valuable to do than dusting. :)
ReplyDeleteJulie - so glad to hear how important writing is to you!
Such a good quote, and just what I needed to hear today as I EMBRACE AND ENJOY (ya hear that, brain?) the OPPORTUNITY to write lots of words today in an attempt to catch up. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou must have known I needed that quote! It's so true! It IS a privilege!
ReplyDeleteJillian - you can do it, I have NO DOUBT. :)
ReplyDeleteAbby - I'm happy this quote was here for you when you needed it. :)
I really like this one, Madeline. It's not work at all, right? =] At least, we shouldn't look at it as drudgery. There are plenty of office jobs for that!
ReplyDeleteMilo - what's that saying, "A bad day writing is still better than a good day at some office job." I'm paraphrasing but you know what I mean. :)
