EXERCISE SHOULD BE A HABIT, LIKE
BRUSHING YOUR TEETH...IT WOULDN'T
CROSS YOUR MIND NOT TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH,
AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SHOULD BE
VIEWED THE SAME WAY.
(Bob Greene)
Yeah, but brushing your teeth doesn't make you sweat. (If it does, you may want to check with your dentist.)
But, really, if you know me well - or, at all - you're laughing your butt off that I used a quote about exercise. (Although, I suppose all that laughing would count as physical activity, so good for you...) Here's the thing: while my mind could be entered in the Olympics for all the gymnastics and racing and diving it does, my body pretty much sits around and drinks enough iced coffee (cream, no sugar, and preferably Dunkin Donuts, thanks) to replace the blood flowing through my veins. And you know what? It's starting to show.
In my body, yes. In my energy level, yes. But also, I've noticed a sluggishness in my creativity. My imagination feels...stagnant. And although I could live with (for the most part) wearing larger size clothes, I refuse to let my mind get any flabbier.
I'm not going to become an Olympic athlete or a gym rat. My goal is just to move more. Even if all that means is pacing around my house trying to figure out why in the world my main character is going into the woods when good sense would have her running the other way...see, even my characters get more activity than I do.
So, this week, let's all go for a walk - in the neighborhood, on the beach, around a track. Run a race or ride in bike-a-thon. Play Wii. Play tennis. Play Wii tennis. Move your mind, move your body.
Oh, and don't forget to brush your teeth.
Oh, and don't forget to brush your teeth.
That's right - go do something fun. You're more apt to stick with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't do coffee, but I will take a Dunkin Donut!
Alex - I try to just have the coffee and not the donut. Sometimes I succeed. :)
ReplyDeleteand brushing your teeth takes 2 min, part of getting ready to go or for bed...
ReplyDeleteexercise takes time away from other things i have to do...
but i want to and am walking my dog more, who needs ex too!
Tara - I think about taking the tortoises for a walk but I'm afraid they'd outrun me. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a sports junkie always and an exercise junkie sometimes, so of course I support this message :-D. Team sports like basketball and ultimate frisbee are my favorite, but I think walking and cycling are best for my writing brain. Zumba is definitely the most fun, and something I recommend to all my exercise-hating friends :-).
ReplyDeleteBest of luck getting on the move, however you decide to do it!
Jillian - I think reading your posts about all your sports and activities should qualify as exercise for the rest of us. I'm always exhausted after reading all you do. :)
ReplyDeleteI've been going to the gym for almost 13 years, and been an instructor for 3. It's amazing how many people stop coming once they reach their weight loss/fitness goals, not realising they should keep on coming... just like brushing teeth is a great way to explain it.
ReplyDeleteAnnalisa - I wish I had thought about fitness/exercise/moving as a habit when I was younger. Might've made things easier now. Oh well - never too late to start...and to keep going! :)
ReplyDeleteOur oldest member is 82, so anyone younger than that can certainly start some kind of regime. He only started about 4 years ago himself!
