KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO TRY
TO BELITTLE YOUR AMBITIONS.
TO BELITTLE YOUR AMBITIONS.
SMALL PEOPLE ALWAYS DO THAT,
BUT THE REALLY GREAT MAKE YOU FEEL THAT YOU, TOO, CAN BECOME GREAT.
BUT THE REALLY GREAT MAKE YOU FEEL THAT YOU, TOO, CAN BECOME GREAT.
(Mark Twain)
I am truly grateful to have one of those great people in my life. My husband has never - not once, not ever - made me feel like I couldn't succeed at writing (or at anything else I ever tried or wanted to try.) He bought me my first word processor (yes, I am that old.) He made such a big deal out of the first manuscript I finished that I felt like I'd already made the bestseller list. When two of my stories were published in anthologies - in actual books! - he brought them to work to put in the waiting area for everyone to see. (Not only that, but he'd report back to me - "Someone read Hint Fiction today because it was on the other table.") Whether it's a reading festival, a book signing, an author talk or a writing conference, he's either there with me or encouraging me to go. And don't get me started on all the writing books and writing related things he's gotten me for various birthdays and holidays.
I can only hope that I've been - and will continue to be! - that person for him, too.
Let's all be that person today, this week - for someone, in some way.
Great start to the week! I love how your husband has helped inspire you to continue chasing your dreams. That's really cute :)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
Jess - he's a keeper. I hope you have a great week! :)
ReplyDeleteYour husband sounds perfect. I've got a similiar one. He makes me feel like I'm not wasting my time by writing when I should be doing the housework.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is one of my favorite quotes ever, I love it. I've always been so amazed at people who will try to squash someone's dreams, presumably under the guise of being "helpful." Love that your husband has been so supportive of your aspirations!
ReplyDeleteMy significant other has been very supportive too. He keeps pushing me to get my book out there and keeps researching all the possible ways I could do that. It's sweet.
ReplyDeleteAnnalisa - the only time my husband cares about housework getting done (as opposed to writing or something else creative or fun) is if the dust bunnies are bigger than the tortoises. :)
ReplyDeleteJulie - I'm so glad you love this quote! It's one of my new favorites.
MJ - he's kind of like your publicist or marketing team. :)
Love Mark Twain quotes--and particularly this one. And I think I kinda love your husband, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh! And I loved your story in One Forty Fiction. Amazing how you've captured such an immense/intense fear in so few words.
(And yeah, I have that fear, too--)
Cathy - oh, I'm pretty sure The Beneficent Mr. Hall is a good guy, too. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks re "Class Trip" over at One Forty Fiction!
What a wonderful husband! I feel blessed to be married to a supportive one too..great post, and perfect reminder!
ReplyDeleteLisa - I'm glad you have one of the great ones, too. :)
ReplyDeleteinspirational! and i love mark twain! i'd love to time travel back so i could stalk him just to hear his awesome words!
ReplyDeleteTara - he does have some amazing and inspirational lines, doesn't he? Glad you enjoyed this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quote - after a few days of discouraging words, the inspiration was gratefully received.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay! for supportive husbands! :-)
