Larry & Mrs. Larry's Shell-f Full of Books Giveaway!

I went through the trauma of clearing out my bookshelves a few months ago, saying goodbye to old friends who are moving on, welcoming new found loves. My husband and the tortoises witnessed my meltdown and tried (my husband, not the tortoises) to convince me that since I donate the books, they'll go off and find new readers who'll like them and pass them on or who'll fall in love with them and keep them. Good deal.

But instead of donating all the books to the local charity, I decided to keep some aside and do a book giveaway here on the blog. Larry and Mrs. Larry were gracious enough to lend their names to the contest but they thought it'd be better if I chose the books to give away.

Ah, but here's the rub. You won't know what titles, or how many books, will arrive in the box. It's a mystery, my friends. (Don't blame me - that was Larry and Mrs. Larry's idea.) I will say this - the books are gently used and anyone who knows me or reads this blog has a pretty good idea of the kinds of things I like to read.

So, here's how it works. Leave a comment on this post. That's it. The only thing I ask is that the winner pay it forward somehow - pass on one or two of the books after you've read them or before, if they're not your cup of tea. Deadline is midnight, EST on Friday, March 4, 2011. I'll choose TWO winners at random and announce the names over the weekend.

Please give my books a good home.  Sniff.

  1. Madeline, I too am a book lover and feel your pain of realizing some favorites have to go to make room for the joy of new ones. If my name is chosen I will appreciate the titles, enjoy them and pass them carefully along to other fellow book lovers. You may rest assured.

  3. Hi Madeline,
    I love a mystery--and books even more.
And I'm a fervent believer in donating books and/or sharing my books with friends.

  5. Oh, Donna - I'm with you on the donating books but not so much on the sharing. I'm a selfish girl when it comes to my books. :)

  9. What? I thought I left a comment here...well, I know we like the same books and I promise that I will try to read them.

  13. Madeline, you're very brave to pass on the love! You've inspired me to do the same.

Have you thought about writing a so-long message in the front covers? It's a nice way of saying good-bye to each book and sending a beautiful hello to the new recipient(s). Somehow it would seem easier for me that way.

  14. Thanks, Lori! But now, if you win this contest, you'll have MORE books to give away! :)

I like your idea of a so-long message but that would take me forever to do and besides, I'd probably end up deciding to keep the book after all my heart-wrenching words. :)

  15. I would definitely pay it forward. Once I've read a book, I give it to my dad,he reads it, then passes it along to my sister. From there - there's no telling where it goes! Please enter me in the drawing!

  17. I have a hard time parting with books as well. The last time I broke down and did it, I donated almost 100 books (and who knows how many magazines!) to an assisted living facility. My husband was happy (more room, less fire hazard) and who knows if the dogs were happy--they wagged their tails anyway!!!

Thanks to you, Larry and Mrs. Larry for a great idea!

  18. Joanne, if the tortoises could wag their tails, they would, too! :)
