My Favorite Reads of 2010

The end of the year brings lots of things - holiday clean up, resolutions, extra weight gain, higher bills, and, of course, those "Best Of" lists.  I'm a sucker for a good list.  I often suffer from list lust.  So, here is one of my very own - MY FAVORITE READS OF 2010.*

[* This is purely my own opinion.  This is a random ordering.  I started a lot of books but stopped after the first few pages.  I read a lot of books I thought were okay or that I liked/really liked but didn't love.  This list is for the books I couldn't stop thinking about for various reasons days after I was done reading.]

MY FAVORITE READS OF 2010
SAVING CEE CEE HONEYCUTT by Beth Hoffman
THE POSTMISTRESS by Sarah Blake
BLACKLANDS by Belinda Bauer
BEFORE I FALL (YA) by Lauren Oliver
SHOOT TO THRILL by P.J. Tracy
THE HOUSE AT RIVERTON by Kate Morton
THE KITCHEN HOUSE by Kathleen Grissom
STILL MISSING by Chevy Stevens
MOCKINGJAY (YA) by Suzanne Collins
TRASH (YA) by Andy Mulligan
BACKSEAT SAINTS by Joshilyn Jackson
GODS IN ALABAMA by Joshilyn Jackson
THE CARETAKER OF LORNE FIELD by Dave Zeltersman
THE SCHOOL OF ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS by Erica Bauermeister
FULL DARK, NO STARS by Stephen King
ROOM by Emma Donoghue
UNDER THIS UNBROKEN SKY by Shandi Mitchell

Please feel free to leave your thoughts on these books, or any others that made your favorite reads list, in the comments section.  I'm always on the lookout for a great book, and hey, it's never too late to start the 2011 list.

Happy New Year!

  1. I'd have to REALLY sit and think to come up with my best books list...but oddly, I've read very few of your faves. So now I can just bookmark this post and work on your recommendations. 2011 done.

(P.S. Hope your 2011 is blessed with a bounty of beautiful writing-and acceptances!)

  2. I'll have to copy this list and give some a try. Philip Reeves is a favorite of our family. We are currently reading through his Larklight Triology (YA). His Traction City series is a must even for those who are not sci fi enthusiasts.
    Happy New Year!

  3. Cathy, my best writerly wishes for your 2011 right back at you!

Glad I could help with your future reading. I keep track of what I read during the year and I note the ones I love - this list was pretty easy for me to come up with. :)

  4. Happy New Year to you, too, Sally!

If I remember correctly, you tend to like "rosier" stories, right? I would definitely check out SAVING CEE CEE HONEYCUTT and THE SCHOOL OF ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS.

I made a note to checkout those books by Philip Reeves. :)

  5. Madeline, I just finished Full Dark, No Stars yesterday. WOW! I particularly liked what SK wrote in the Afterword. Harsh, dark stuff, but excellent nonetheless!

I need to add some of those lists to my to-read pile...

  6. Stacy, I always like SK's notes in his books.

Glad I could add some books to your to-be-read list but I bet you have some good recommendations, too, since you're surrounded by books all day!

  7. Dear Larry and Mrs. Larry,
Very excited to hear that your biped included Under This Unbroken Sky on her favorite reads list. Have you read Come, Thou Tortoise by Jessica Grant? I suspect you may discover an affinity with one of the characters.
    All the best

  8. sm, the tortoises' biped absolutely loved UNDER THIS UNBROKEN SKY. (I was torn between finishing it so it could go on this year's list or waiting so it could go on 2011's list where it would be a great way to start off a new year of reading!)

I gave the tortoises your message and all of us will definitely check out the book you mentioned. Thanks for stopping by! :)
