I would love to say that I am brave, resilient, tough, that I zoom back like one of those super bouncy balls. But I'm really just a big mush. I admit it - I whine. I wallow. I mope. I cry.
Now, I believe there's a time for this (hello, one millionth rejection!) I also believe in treating ourselves with gentleness and kindness and respect. Beating ourselves up doesn't do much good.
However, there comes a point - for me, anyway - when even I can't stand the sound of my own whimpering, and that is when I turn to one of my all time favorite lines from The Big Bang Theory -
BUCK UP, SISSY PANTS!
How's that for some Monday Motivation? Too harsh or just what you needed to hear today? What do you tell yourself when you need some tough love?
Ha! I love that show. Sometimes I tell myself there is no quitting and I must never give up. Suck it up and carry on!
ReplyDeleteSometimes we need that tough love. Other times, we need chocolate. And/or wine. :)
DeleteSometimes we need that kind of message. All that crying and moping isn't exactly productive!
ReplyDeleteI like a good moody wallow as much as the next person, but sometimes enough is enough. :)
DeleteI allow myself to mope for a little while after a big disappointment, but I don't usually wallow in it long.
ReplyDeleteMy line is: Suck it up, buttercup. :)
Ha! That's a good line, too.
DeleteI think everyone needs some time to whine. But I know what you mean. Unfortunately, I'm not always so kind with myself, though. Definitely don't be afraid to whine. I'll listen. I love The Big Bang Theory.
ReplyDeleteI have to be careful not to stay too long in the whining/wallowing place because I can get really stuck there. It's happened before.
DeleteWhenever I need to laugh, I turn to TBBT, especially the older episodes. :)
I mope too. And sometimes, a full on cry really helps. I love that quote, and I love the character too. Amy is my favourite - the tiara scene, and the 'Please pass the butter' one, are such perfectly timed pieces of comedy!
ReplyDeleteI do what Oprah calls "the ugly cry." :)
DeleteOh, I love Amy and the tiara scene!
One of my favorite things about the show is how Leonard's and Sheldon's mothers are the opposite of their sons and how that plays out. So funny!
I love Big Bang. We just finished watching the whole series (thru Season 8) and it's hysterical from start to finish. Leonard's mom never fails to crack me up.
ReplyDeleteShe is absolutely hilarious! And Sheldon's Mom, too. So different, yet both so funny. :)
DeleteI love that! I haven't watched the show so hadn't heard that phrase before.
ReplyDeleteOh, I would so give the show a try, Patricia! It's in re-runs all over the place, but I would find the first episode/season somewhere and start with that. It's a hoot! :)
DeleteLOL I love this line. Going to remember it for myself!
ReplyDeleteMaybe use it when you need a little extra oomph to run one more mile? :)
DeleteI have those moments. All of us might. Turning to comedy is a great answer. I usually read to get my mind off my problems. At least we can focus on something else. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnna from elements of emaginette
Reading is usually my first go-to, especially something that really sucks me in, like suspense or mystery. But when I need a good laugh, I turn to some of my favorite TV shows, like TBBT.
DeleteExcellent motivation! Yes, some days rejections flow off you no problem, and other days they're incredibly rough. But the fact that you keep going DOES mean you're tough, and maybe not as squishy as you think. ;)
ReplyDeleteI kind of like to think of myself as a tortoise - hard on the outside, squishy on the inside. :)
DeleteExcellent motivation Madeline. I also have to often motivate myself, especially when a rejection email drops into my inbox.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we need a hug. Sometimes we need a kick in the pants. :)
DeleteI LOVE "Big Bang." I think it's one of the funniest, most intelligent comedy that's ever been on television. (Gee! Think they'll ever make a full-length movie???)
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I'm not much of a whiner or moper, for which I credit my parents, who if they ever saw a tear fall from my eyes, no matter what the reason, would say, "Do you want something to cry about?" That put things into perspective real quick-like! :)
Do you know they're making a prequel of sorts, called Young Sheldon? It's about Sheldon as a child, growing up in East Texas, with Jim Parsons doing the voiceover/narration similar to The Wonder Years (another excellent show!) :)
DeleteI like to throw myself a pity party and wallow a bit, but after a while, I'm ready to suck it up, buttercup, and get back to work.
ReplyDeleteI hear you! Giving ourselves permission to wallow and whine is important. Knowing when to end the party and send those guys home is the trick. :)
DeleteIf I get really down in the dumps, my favorite rock songs will bring me out of it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! There's nothing like dancing around like a maniac to shake those blues loose. Or maybe that's just me? :)
