Monday Magic

I came across this quote/story by author Karen Rivers awhile back and thought it was just a wonderful reminder to keep our "glittering eyes" open . . .

*****

"ON MY DINING ROOM WALL, I PAINTED THIS QUOTE FROM ROALD DAHL'S BOOK THE MINPINS:

'Above all, watch with glittering eyes
the whole world around you because
the greatest secrets are always hidden
in the most unlikely places.
Those who don't believe in magic
will never find it.'

I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO NEVER FORGET TO USE THEIR OWN GLITTERING EYES. IDEAS ARE EVERYWHERE. THEY ARE SOMETIMES FLEETING, BUT SOMETIMES THEY STAY TANGLED WITH YOUR OWN IMAGINATION, AND THEY COME TOGETHER AND FORM STORIES.

THAT IS WHERE THE MAGIC LIVES: IN THE WEAVING TOGETHER OF SOMETHING YOU REMEMBER AND SOMETHING YOU HEARD AND SOMETHING YOU DREAMED AND SOMETHING YOU ONCE SAW ON FACEBOOK AND A CHARACTER YOU CAN SUDDENLY SEE WITH PERFECT CLARITY, WHO IS WAITING TO TELL YOU HER OWN TALE."

*****

I believe in magic.

Do you?

  1. Yes. What a wonderful reminder. I love the "weaving together..." Really, that's where it all comes from!

  2. Blending all of those sources together would indeed be magic!
What magic do you see in Mr. and Mrs. Larry?

    1. It's funny because even though they're young tortoises, they seem to hold some sort of ancient wisom in their wrinkly faces. :)

  3. That is so true. I never thought of it before, but authors and artists are truly magicians.

    1. Isn't it? It struck me the first time I read it, then stayed with me after that.

  6. Glittering eyes are definitely needed in this cruel world of ours. I do believe in magic. I sometimes forget about it:)

    1. I think a lot of us forget about magic sometimes. It's easy to do, what with the daily grind and with all the tragedy in this "cruel world." But that's when we need it the most, when we must look for it the hardest and the most fervently!

  7. I don't know if I believe in magic but I believe in the power of love and God and the goodness of people. Even over the past few weeks of horror in the world, I still believe.

  8. I think magic sometimes masquerades as serendipity, or coincidence, or synchronicity. We do need to stay alert so we don't miss it, no matter what it's called.

    1. Staying alert is a huge part of it. How many times have we missed magic because we weren't paying attention?

  10. I believe life is filled with magic. It is everywhere--we just have to be still and let it happen.

  11. Yes! The world would be a sadder place without magic. Good thing it's in my life. :)

  12. I believe in magic. You just need to be able to recognize it for such.

    1. I wonder how many people see magic but don't realize it, don't recognize it for what it is?

  13. Yes, I do! Love that quote and I love that she painted it on her dining room wall. I might like to do that, the next time I paint . . . if I can find someone who can paint pretty writing. :)

    1. I think you can buy quotes or letters to put on the wall...? With my luck, I'd spell a word wrong and not be able to unpeel it or something. :)

  14. I love this quote! Dahl is one of my favorite authors. He had a gift for finding the magic. Sometimes we just need to pay attention. I love how Anne Lamott suggests writing down those snippets of life and memories on notecards--you never know what will become of them.

    1. I hadn't heard about writing those snippets and memories on notecards. Fun!

  15. I want to believe, and sometimes I do...when I can shut up the cynic in me long enough!

    1. It's not easy, but I believe we can shut up the internal cynic and pessimist, at least sometimes. :)
