Motivational Monday

YOU WON'T ACHIEVE ANYTHING
IN THIS LIFE
IF THE ONLY THING YOU CAN SEE
ARE REASONS YOU SHOULDN'T
TRY SOMETHING.
(Janet Reid)

I am guilty - shamefully so - of doing exactly this.

The reasons why I shouldn't do something race to mind with the speed and the fierceness of a tortoise to banana. (Trust me. You don't want to stand between Larry and banana.)

I wish those first thoughts were encouraging and positive. But they're not.

I would love to approach ideas with openness, new experiences with excitement. But I don't.

This just means I have to work harder. I need to elbow my way through the doubt and the naysaying (the way Mrs. Larry shoves Larry aside to get the banana.) I need to push past the reasons why I shouldn't so I can embrace the reasons why I should

And I will.

  1. I usually ask myself what's the worst that can happen. Most of the time my fears are worse than the repercussions, so I suck it up and do it.

For the record, I'm afraid of everything, so I'm used to having this conversation with myself. LOL!

    1. I think what happens is since my imagination tends to go deep and dark, I often get stuck there, in those fears, and I struggle to find my way out and see the reality, the more possible repercussions.

  2. Excellent advice. When I was young, I was guilty of this, but I've gotten more stubborn, I mean, determined! :)

    1. I think I was actually more stubborn/determined when I was younger! Sheesh! Where's all the good stuff about getting older?!

  3. I'd love to see the tortoises fighting over the banana. You go, Mrs. Larry. No offense to Larry but I have to side with the girls.
Sadly, I share the same issue when it comes to reasons why I shouldn't do something. If seeing those things was a sport I could be an Olympian.

    1. It's more that they "elbow" each other out of the way. If they had elbows. Maybe it's more that they "shell-bow" each other around? :)

Hmm, that would be about the only sport I'd be good at. I'd take the Gold. :)

  4. You totally need to post a video of Larry and Mrs. Larry—I want to see them "elbowing" each other over this banana! Lol. And what a great quote! Ms. Reid is always full of so much wisdom, eh?

    1. I'll give it a try one of these days, but I'm pretty sure the banana will be gone by the time I'm ready to take the video! :o

And how great that Ms. Reid shares so much of that wisdom with all of us.

  5. You go, girl! You CAN and should try it all!

  6. I know I've hesitated and had reasons for not doing something, but I can't imagine living life only making excuses for why I should do something. It sounds boring.

    1. I meant the "should" as more of an empowering choice, like whatever it is should be exciting, it should be inspirational, etc so don't miss out! That kind of thing. I'm not a big fan of the "normal" "should's", like housework. :)

  7. On the other hand, we can pick and chose what we're willing to try and what we don't want to touch with a ten-foot pole. For instance, I might want to try writing a romance novel, but I will never, never, never parachute from an airplane. :D

    1. Oh, there are absolutely things I have no interest in trying, like skiing. I worry more about talking myself out of the things I do want to try.

  8. There may only be one reason to do something/anything. If its a doozy the excuses not to get pushed aside.

    1. Yep. I've done things I was terrified of, but the desire to do them outweighed the fear.

  9. Sometimes past negative experiences have made me more wary or reluctant to dive into things. However, I make a point in telling myself that I don't want the negative forces to win, and so I make the effort to achieve what I can (or should I say, what little I can?) in spite of the negative voices.

    1. Fighting the negative forces is a courageous thing to do and what is achieved - no matter how "little" - is an even bigger triumph.
