What if . . . ?

The other day, my sister emailed and said to guess what my brother-in-law found while cleaning out part of their fireplace. Off the top of my head, my guesses were - secret door, tunnel, time capsule left by previous owners, bones. (You know I had to go there, didn't you? I had a list of other creepy things after "bones" but I left them out of my response to my sister. No use giving her nightmares….)

Here's where the truth can sometimes be as strange or stranger than fiction - they found old shotgun shells, plus another really old gun and a box of bullets. Now, from a safety standpoint, all is well - the kids weren't home and the police came and took everything. But from a creative, wild imagination, writer's standpoint, the story is far from over….

My biggest question: Where is the shotgun? All we've got are some shells. Are we missing a gun? Is it somewhere in the house? Or did someone take it? Who? Why?

Did previous owners put the stuff there? Or did someone in their household? Or someone who did work on the house? Did someone ever come back for it? Why or why not?

Was any of it evidence of a crime? Are there fingerprints, DNA, blood on any of it? Whose? What else is buried beneath that fireplace, beneath the house?

What if…?

Go on, finish that question in the comments. Let's see what you got….

  1. Maybe some teenager was trying to hide those from his parents. I know, not as good as your ideas.

    1. I like that idea, Alex! But what if it was a girl hiding them? Were they hers? A friend's? A boyfriend's? A girlfriend's?

  2. Maybe it was a murder weapon, hidden there by a previous owner. It's kind of scary, really cool mystery.

    1. Good one! Who did he or she murder? And why? And where's the body?

  3. It was probably a woman who was sick of her hunter husband being gone every weekend! :)

Sorry, went for the humor rather than the macabre this morning. :)

  4. Oh my gosh, how creepy and fun! I can't think of anything but love your ideas. Also would have been fun if they really had found bones. :D ;)

  5. My mind goes to: what were they defending themselves from that they had to stash the supplies there? Zombies? Wereanimals? Household furniture come to life? Ghosts- is the house cursed? Will whatever is was come back? Is there an ancient prophecy about whatever it was thay they prepared but never happened and it turns out it was just delayed and now whatever it was will come back after they've just gien away their only protection from it?!?

Yeah... that's where my mind goes...

    1. For all my The Walking Dead geekiness, I never even considered zombies! Maybe whoever hid the stuff was becoming a survivalist? Or maybe they thought they knew something the rest of us didn't….

  6. Hmm... I think there's a diary buried there, too—maybe even a confession!

  7. I definitely think now that they've been disturbed, the ghosts of the people who were holed up there - fighting for survival - will come back in search of them. Probably best not to tell your sister that, either!!!

  8. So...had the fireplace been used? I can just imagine flames setting off the rounds and shooting everybody in the living room!

    1. I'm not sure, but I think where they found the stuff wasn't directly on the heat. Still, though...yikes!
