We All Float Down Here

Way back, in 1987, I read this:

Today, the pages are yellowed, the print is probably too small for me to read, and it smells like old books and memories. It's one of my favorite King books.

In 1990, I watched this:

Not on DVD but on TV over the two nights it was broadcast. I'm pretty sure I didn't sleep either of those nights or many of the ones after. Tim Curry terrifies me to this day.

In about a month from now, a new version of IT returns. While I'm usually skeptical of remakes, the trailers for this not only look true enough to the core story, but they also make me want to pee my pants. Seriously. I'm not sure I'll be able to see this movie in the theater.

I've included the teaser trailer below because it's my favorite so far. If you have two minutes to spare, if you're in a well-lit place, and if you're not afraid of clowns or red balloons, I'd give it a look. (Okay, honestly, I just don't want to be the only one with nightmares . . . . )

Have you read IT? Seen the original miniseries? Plan on seeing the movie? If so, are you brave enough to go to the theater or will you wait for viewing from the safety of your couch? Do you have any favorite horror novels or movies?

  1. I wasn't crazy about the first movie version. I assume the book is much better. Although anything with a clown is creepy anyway.

    1. Generally speaking, I think King's books are better than the movies because you get so much more of the characters in the books. Some of the movies are excellent, though, like Shawshank, Stand by Me, Misery.

  2. I did read that book. For a while I read everything King wrote. Didn't know they were remaking that one but I'll probably wait for it to come out on video rather than seeing it at the theater.

    1. King has a new novel coming out in the Fall, written with his son, Owen.

Still not sure if I'm going to be brave enough to see this in the theater.... :o

  3. Clowns give me the creeps, so that's a big no on IT. I want to sleep at night.

  4. I have no seen it or read it. I'm too much of a wuss to watch horror, but I can read it, this is just something that never really perked my interest.

    1. If I remember correctly, there's more to this story than the scary clown. There's the idea of friendships and what that's like when you're a kid, growing up, etc. King seems to do that when kids are the main characters, like in Stand By Me/The Body.

  5. I haven't read the book, but I want to. I keep an eye out at the used bookstore every time I visit. I really want to watch this movie;) But I hate clowns in general. Something about their smiles unsettle me.

    1. Is there an ebook/Kindle version of it maybe?

      I don't think Pennywise's smile will help matters. :o

  6. I haven't read IT yet -- I tend to prefer reading horror because trying to watch it in movies or on TV scares me to death. I'm prone to nightmares already so I don't need to give my imagination any new visuals. :D

    1. I hear you! Reading horror doesn't tend to scare me as much as seeing/watching it. There are exceptions, of course. Plenty of times, I've found myself almost jumping out my skin when reading something scary and there's a sudden scratching at the window or a creak of a floorboard.... :o

  7. I haven't seen or read it, but I wouldn't rule it out. I can imagine it making a lasting impression if you see it at a young age. Maybe I'll catch this one on DVD.

    1. I have a feeling I read and watched too many creepy things at too young an age. :)

  8. It is one of my favorites from King. I've read the book and seen the old series. The new trailers are terrifying! I'll see it when it comes out on DVD because then I can pause it or forward it if I need to! One of my newest favorite horror authors is Christopher Buehlman.

    1. Yeh! I love the idea of curling up on my couch and watching IT, being able to pause it if it's too scary, but I don't know if I can wait that long.

  9. I'm not good with horror - I had to give up on an episode of Black Mirror last night - so I won't be watching this... I'd never sleep again! Tim Curry is one of the most fabulously creepy actors ever.

    1. Oh, I watched the first episode of Black Mirror - totally freaky.

I am so tempted to go back and watch the old mini-series of IT and have Tim Curry scare me all over again. :)

  10. Yes, I read IT and saw the first movie adaptation, too. I thought the movie was pretty good, but not nearly as good as the book, which I find is usually the case. I'm not sure if this was my favorite King book or now. I really liked "The Shining," too. (And a lot of other ones.) The movie adaptation was terrific, but I was really disappointed they didn't include the topiary animals in the movie.

Dean Koontz has written a bunch of really good horrors, too. Like "Whispers." (Makes me shudder just to think of it...)

As for the new IT movie, if I watch it, I'll wait until I can watch it at home. Snacks are a lot cheaper here... :)

    1. It's not my favorite - that's THE STAND - but it's ONE of my favorites.

Great point about the snacks! Although, wherever I am, I have a feeling I'll be so scared I'll jump and candy and/or popcorn will fly everywhere. :)

  11. I definitely won't see this. I can't bear clowns and there's nothing scarier than the IT clown LOL.

    1. You could try reading IT, although sometimes I find my imagination via the printed word is way scarier than what I see on a screen.

  12. I can't do scary movies. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is :-)

    1. I hear you re the not sleeping. I don't have nightmares as much as I have weird dreams - something normal/simple makes odd twists and turns in my dreaming mind. Well, that happens in my awake mind, too. :)

  13. I read the book and saw the original miniseries. I hated clowns long before Pennywise, but he just confirmed my distaste for them (yeah, and John Wayne Gacy). Like you, I'm also skeptical of remakes, but I am thinking of seeing the new movie as it does look good. As I'm the only person in my house that is into horror, I'll be watching it on my own. That ought to double the fun! ;)

    1. Oh, yikes, Debbie! Good luck watching it by yourself. Maybe watch it in the daytime? So you'll have time to recover before going to bed.

  14. I want to see this one in the theatre, but I'll have to go by myself. My husband is a wuss about scary movies. The book is one of my favorites from King. The 90s version on TV? Eh. It was okay.

    1. You are one brave woman! :)

We recently watched the 90s version, and it wasn't as good as I remembered, although Tim Curry was still creepy.

  15. My mom and my older sister read it together back when my sister was a teen. My younger sister is reading it now. I haven't read it. I've seen the TV version at least 11 times. I loved it that much lol. I went to see the movie with my older sister this weekend, and holy crap was it a thousand times scarier than the TV version! I'll try to read the book, but I don't know....lol
