YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MUSTER
PASSION ALL THE TIME.
HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT BUILT TO BE
PERPETUAL VOLCANOES.
YOU MAY GO FOR DAYS JUST FORCING YOURSELF
TO SHOW UP AT YOUR CREATIVE WORK.
THAT FORCING AND THAT SHOWING UP
ARE HONORABLE AND NECESSARY.
AT THE SAME TIME,
DO TRY TO LOCATE AND KINDLE
YOUR PASSION.
YOU DON'T NEED IT,
AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT,
EVERY DAY,
BUT YOU DO NEED IT AS YOUR
CORE ORIENTATION.
SOMETHING IN YOU MUST IGNITE
AT LEAST SOME OF THE TIME
IF YOUR WORK IS
TO FEEL ALIVE AND
IF YOU ARE TO FEEL ALIVE.
(Eric Maisel)
At the very core of it, does your work feel alive?
At the very core of you, do you?
It would take a lot of energy to be that excited every day. But you can be excited on the inside.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel guilty if I wasn't all whoo-hoo all the time.
DeleteI think passion also shows whether we're happy at our work too. If you don't enjoy what you're doing, do something else. I hate to see people clobber themselves trying to fit into a mold that at its heart isn't for them.
ReplyDeleteSome days the writing doesn't go well, but at the heart of it, the core of it, there is joy. Same for my core, my heart. :)
DeleteExcellent post! Some days are harder than others, but yes, my writing does feel alive. :)
ReplyDeleteIf it feels alive at its core then you'll make it through the hard days. :)
DeleteThough I can't be excited everyday, when I am writing I feel very alive :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent on feeling alive when writing! :)
DeleteI've felt very excited and motivated at times but sometimes the volcano is very dormant and quiet.
ReplyDeleteI'm learning to give myself permission to let my creative volcano be dormant. :)
DeleteVery true words. I wish I had the energy every day, but that's not possible so I try to utilize the days when I do have the energy.
ReplyDeleteFiguring out how best to harness that energy and use it to its utmost is an important lesson for us to learn.
DeleteToday is one of those days where I have to force it. I didn't want to get up this morning. As a matter of fact, I greatly wished to skip ahead two weeks. I have family visiting...let's just leave it at that. ;)
ReplyDeleteHang in there, Chrys! IWSG is this week, and there will be lots of blogging buddies' support. :)
DeleteBoy, I've been really feeling this quote lately. I think parts of my work feel alive. Maybe someday the rest will catch up. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will, MJ. No worries!
DeleteThe past month or so has been the first time I've felt alive when it comes to writing in nearly a year. I'm hoping it lasts! So far, so good. :)
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for you, Julie! :)
DeleteGood questions. I feel alive when I'm writing, and after I've written.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Donna! :)
Deleteis there such a thing as too much passion? i guess that would be obsession? maybe i need to tone it down... but finishing something makes me feel the best!
ReplyDeletegreat moitivational words for monday! thanks!
Interesting question, Tara! And I wouldn't suggest you tone it down - you need to be you. :)
DeleteMy work: yes.
ReplyDeleteMe: Too much sometimes.
Feeling less alive, blah and gray, is scary, and I think feeling too much alive can be unsettling in a different way. But everyone is different!
DeleteNow THAT'S a quote. I couldn't possibly be passionate every day about my writing, but there are times when I'm inspired. The thing is to just keep at it!
ReplyDeleteKeeping at it is how we succeed. :)
DeleteI think I do, but now I'm watching. :-)

Paying attention is important - otherwise, it's too easy to get distracted and before you know it, everything is all gray and blah.
DeleteGreat words.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a wonderful quote.
DeleteI'll feel a lot more alive after I recover from the quick driving trip we took to Illinois and back last week...but overall, yes, I feel alive and I'm doing my best to bring my current WIP to life.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do think you need a bit of a rest after that trip. :)
