Motivational Monday

AT THIS POINT IN A STORY,
VOICES IN OUR HEADS WHISPER
THAT WE'RE WASTING TIME.
WHY ARE WE SPENDING HOURS ALONE
IN FRONT OF A KEYBOARD?
HOW DOES THIS HELP A HURTING PLANET?

DON'T LISTEN.
STORYTELLING IS A POWERFUL ACT.
STORIES HAVE THE MYSTERIOUS POWER
TO WIDEN HEARTS AND CHANGE MINDS.
THE HUMAN PSYCHE IS NEVER QUITE THE SAME
AFTER RECEIVING A STORY.
(Mitali Perkins)

Stories matter.

All of our stories matter.

Don't. Give. Up.

  1. I'm feeling pretty motivated this week, perhaps because I know I won't get much done next week when we have so many family things going on.

  3. Amen! We could especially think these things now with the horrible things that are happening but we have to remember our stories do matter and can make a difference to at least one person.

    1. We never really know when or where or how our words, our stories will make a difference to someone, whether it entertains them, distracts them, teaches them, makes them laugh etc.

  4. Mitali is far more eloquent than me. I often stare at the screen and wonder if my time would be better spent scrubbing a toilet. But those are wise words she came up with, so I will heed them.

    1. I often thing about all the other things I could be doing that are more practical, more tangible. But then when I'm doing those things, I think about stories and characters and want to be writing, not folding laundry! :)

  5. Needed to hear this right now, Madeline. I've got the writing blues.

    Thanks for the encouragement. <3

    1. You're very welcome! And hang in there - those writing blues will dissipate eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  6. I think this is why in olden days, storytellers around a campfire were such a strong influence on their community. Your brain tells you it's just a story, but your heart knows it's so much more.

    1. Great image, Maria. I think we embrace stories with our whole beings - mind, heart, body, etc. :)

  7. I love this post. I often wonder what in the world I'm doing here at the keyboard, especially when I know I'm not working hard enough to market the fiction I have managed to put on Amazon.

    1. I try really hard to separate the craft from the business. Not always easy to do, though.

  8. Hi Madeline, I agree about stories having a mysterious power and effect on people. They can also encourage and inspire people.

  9. Excellent quote. Stories help people connect to each other. Without them, existence would be dull.

  10. =) That's exactly what I needed to hear today. Maybe it's the sleep deprivation speaking, but the last couple days have been brutal.

  12. Beautiful and powerful words. I often feel like my stories don't matter. But I can't help but write them. Thank you for the motivation.
