TO BE NOBODY BUT YOURSELF
IN A WORLD WHICH IS DOING ITS BEST,
NIGHT AND DAY,
TO MAKE YOU EVERYBODY BUT YOURSELF -
MEANS TO FIGHT THE HARDEST BATTLE
WHICH ANY HUMAN BEING CAN FIGHT -
AND NEVER STOP FIGHTING.
(e e cummings)
No more wanting or needing others' approval. No more caring what others think or say about us. No more berating ourselves for not being "enough" for someone else, for not living up to someone else's standards or expectations. No more cringing when we say "no" - "No, I can't do that" or "No, that won't work for me" or "No, it's not okay." No more thinking that being a good person equals doing what other people want us to do.
May 2015 be the year we fight the good fight, and keep on fighting, all on behalf of our true, best selves.
I am me and I strive to be the best me I can!
ReplyDeleteGo for it, Alex! :)
DeleteIt's a very worthy goal, and something I do strive to do...but also something I struggle with every day. Let's keep on fighting that good fight.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love E.E. Cummings. Great to see him making an appearance!
For some us, it's easier said than done. For me, it's a fight, a battle, I'm willing to wage because I believe it's worth it. :)
DeleteI embraced this about 3 years ago and it is SO liberating. There will always be somebody better than us at EVERYTHING except being who we are, so work it, sister!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! No one can be better at being us than...us!
DeleteWhat do you mean, no cringing when I say I can't do something? I don't know if I can stop that LOL. I am going to fight the good fight though. Love this quote to start off the year. :)
ReplyDeleteHa! I hear you. I sometimes think guilt runs through my veins instead of blood. But I'm getting better. :)
DeleteYep. The best way to get anywhere is to believe you can. I'm working on it. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteLet's all work on it together! :)
DeleteHappy New Year to you, too!
Well said! So tired of feeling rotten because I can't stop comparing myself to everyone else. Definitely something to work on.
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling. It really does help if we can lighten up on ourselves a bit. :)
DeleteI am nobody but myself. Thank you for the wonderful reminder.
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome, Bob!
DeleteThat is so right on. We all need to do a little more of saying 'no.'
ReplyDeleteYes to saying no! :)
DeleteIt's so hard to not care what other people think, but I'm trying to get into that mindset. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Sarah. And know you're not alone in struggling to get into that mindset.
DeleteThat is so true...and I'm finding it gets easier the older I get. I think we become more comfortable with ourselves and stop defining ourselves by what others think of us and start defining ourselves by what WE know about us.
ReplyDeleteGreat comment, Stephanie - thanks!
DeleteAmen! I couldn't agree more. This is a great reminder for me to stop comparing myself to others and just be the best "me" I can be. Happy new year! And best wishes for a wonderful, productive 2015! :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Kristin! And best wishes for you, too. :)
DeleteThanks for an inspiring post. Here's hoping 2015 is a year filled with joy and wonderful surprises.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! And yeh for 2015! :)
DeleteI'm in!
ReplyDeleteGood!
DeletePerfect post. Got maudlin over New Year's thinking I'd spent my life trying to measure up to other people's expectations and was never good enough. I got over it!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for getting over it! Well done!
