A SUCCESSFUL REINVENTION DOESN'T HAPPEN
WHEN YOU HATE THE PERSON YOU ARE.
IT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LOVE YOURSELF ENOUGH
TO BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN DO BETTER
AND DESERVE BETTER.
(Dr. Phil McGraw)
As we start making New Year's resolutions, setting goals, making plans, filling in all those new calendars with deadlines, let's do it with the attitude of improving ourselves, not an attitude of fixing ourselves. We are not broken.
We will work on losing the weight, controlling the temper, keeping our sanity stable because we deserve to be healthier physically, emotionally and mentally. We will work on our spending habits and balancing the checkbook and paying bills on time because we deserve financial security and peace of mind. We will work on delving into our art and improving our craft because we've been given those gifts and talents for a reason, and it would be such a shame to waste them! We will work on dreaming and laughing and embracing beauty and rejoicing in all the good in the world because we deserve to live long, happy, healthy lives.
Happy 2015, everyone!
I'm not broken! Just need a little home improvement.
ReplyDelete"Home improvement" - I like that. :)
DeleteFunny--that really illuminates why I have success in several areas but so much trouble with my body image/overweight stuff. In every other aspect of my life I seem to love enough. In that one, I just have a lot of trouble...
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone in that, Hart - body image is a huge struggle for a lot of us. I'm trying to get better at appreciating everything my body already is and can do while still trying to get stronger and healthier.
DeleteGreat advice! I feel like I'm broken quite often, so I should keep this in mind.
ReplyDeleteI think it will really help....
DeleteI constantly remind myself to be a better person. Kinder, more patience, a better friend, daughter, wife and mother. We can all improve and I always make it a goal for the new year.
ReplyDeleteGreat goal, Susan! And that's the trick - improvement, not fixing.
DeleteCan I get an AMEN! This is such a great post. All too often I begin a new year with so many goals related to losing weight, getting in shape, and becoming a better writer. I love the idea of improving myself, not fixing myself. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Kristin! Now go for it! :)
DeleteThere definitely is something to that. We sabotage ourselves sometimes... Hopefully 2015 will be the year we all get healthier!
ReplyDeleteAmen to a healthier - mentally, physically, and all around - 2015! :)
DeleteWise words! Here's to a wonderful and fulfilling 2015...
ReplyDeleteHappy 2015 to you, Simon!
DeleteI actually think we are all broken, and we can't fix ourselves. We can improve ourselves somewhat, depending on how persistent and determined we are, but there is a fundamental brokenness which is a part of human nature. As a Christian, I accept my weakness and allow God to make me strong. Whatever is good in me, is Him. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteWhen I thought of myself as broken, I felt hopeless. When I instead come from a place of faults and flaws and human-ness, I feel the joy of possibilities and growth. :)
DeleteHappy New Year to you!
Wonderful advice. I think I just need a little tinkering this year. Happy New Year back atcha!
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Noelle! Go for it!
DeleteNo need to work on the sanity for me. That's already gone. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful new year!
Ha! :)
DeleteHappy New Year to you!
