YOU DON'T KNOW WHY YOU STARTED YOUR NOVEL,
YOU NO LONGER REMEMBER WHY YOU IMAGINED
THAT ANYONE WOULD WANT TO READ IT,
AND YOU'RE PRETTY SURE THAT EVEN IF YOU FINISH IT
IT WON'T HAVE BEEN WORTH THE TIME OR ENERGY
AND EVERY TIME
YOU STOP LONG ENOUGH TO COMPARE IT
TO THE THING THAT YOU HAD IN YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU BEGAN -
A GLITTERING, BRILLIANT, WONDERFUL NOVEL,
IN WHICH EVERY WORD SPITS FIRE AND BURNS,
A BOOK AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN
THE BEST BOOK YOU EVER READ -
IT FALLS SO PAINFULLY SHORT
THAT YOU'RE PRETTY SURE THAT IT WOULD BE A MERCY
SIMPLY TO DELETE THE WHOLE THING.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB.
THAT'S HOW NOVELS GET WRITTEN.
(Neil Gaiman)
Yes. Just . . . yes.
That's exactly where I'm at with my WIP. I needed these words this morning.
ReplyDeleteI needed those words, too. :)
DeleteMay self-doubt never conquer our dreams :-)
ReplyDeleteNow that's a motivational quote! :)
DeleteIf only the real vision would just make it to the page...
ReplyDeleteIf only.... Sigh.
DeleteExactly how I feel.
DeleteThat is SO my state of mind right now. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI hope it helps!
DeleteHaha. Oh, yes!
ReplyDeleteYou know it!
DeleteEvery single book I write...that is exactly how I feel.
ReplyDeleteObviously, you're not alone.... :)
DeleteNeil is so wise. My ideas are so good. And the thing that ends up written down is just not that.
ReplyDeleteI hear you!
DeleteOh yes, I've felt like that. I just did . . . last week, I think. I looked at the box of books in my basement that I pre-ordered for book signings . . . and I wondered if they would be there ten years from now. I had a book signing in June during a week that I felt ill and it went well, but I didn't have the energy to do anything after that for a bit. Time flew by. The books sat. Sales have been glacial. And I started thinking that the world might have better off if I hadn't started that stinking trilogy - and I have yet to finish the last book! Agh.
ReplyDeleteThen, a really kind writer friend bought one of my books.
Then, somehow, someway, I decided to just go for it and ask a few places if they would host me for a book signing, and one has said yes so far.
So, I'm determined to keep writing and not let that box of books rot in my basement. :)
Keep going, Tyrean! :)
DeleteSigh. Yep. That's it exactly.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is we're not alone....
DeleteIt's reassuring to hear that even the best of the best have doubts too.
ReplyDeleteIt really is reassuring, isn't it?
DeleteThis quote came right at a time when I am doubting what I've written. Couldn't be more perfect. I feel very bolstered, thanks. How did you know?
ReplyDeleteI'm always so glad to hear when these Motivational Monday posts hit home for people. :)
DeleteOh yea. Although with my current one, I'm still in the hopeful stage. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteStay in that hopeful stage as long as you can. :)
DeleteLove it. It's wonderful to know Gaiman experiences that too!
ReplyDeleteIt really is sort of comforting, isn't it?
