Motivational Monday

DON'T BE UPSET BY RESULTS
YOU DIDN'T GET
WITH WORK YOU DIDN'T DO.
(Author Unknown)

Hmm, so I guess I shouldn't glare at the too high number on the scale when, over the last couple of weeks, I ate way too much Thai food and brownies, and spent way too much time watching Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of Game of Thrones. (Okay, honestly, that last part was sooo worth it!)

And I guess I shouldn't moan and groan about my novels not being on bookshelves, virtual or otherwise, when, um, I haven't actually taken a story from start to finish for longer than I care to admit.

Most of the time, when other people succeed, it's because they put in the work. It drives me crazy when people are criticized for what they have, for what they've achieved, whether it's money or fame or peace of mind. The labor, the effort, the sacrifice often goes unnoticed…except by those actually doing it.

I want to be a person who does the work. And if I don't do the work, then it's no one's fault but my own. Not the scale. Not the publishing industry. Me.

Let's make sure, whatever our goal, that we're putting in the work this week, and always.

  1. So true! We can't moan about what we don't have if we did not to try to get it.
And one can never have too much Thai food...

    1. You know it's bad when the people at the Thai place greet my husband by name, both on the phone and in person. :)

  2. o/ Can I blame the scale a LITTLE bit? ;)

  3. Can't get anywhere without putting in the work. Great post for the start of another week!

  4. Hey, Game of Thrones won't watch itself...

I want to be a person who does the work, too. In all aspects of my life.

    1. You already are doing the work, MJ, especially in regards to your writing - your cover reveal is going so well. :)

  5. Love this! I think so many times people think, "If I want it bad enough, it will happen." I think if we want it bad enough and work for it hard enough, it will happen. Everything worth doing is worth the effort!

    1. Most of the people who have achieved success sacrificed and worked their butts off - and continue to do so!

  6. I can think of a few places I'd like to hang that quote. Over my computer. At the day job (for my coworkers, not me. =P)

  7. Great advice. One day at a time is all we can do. For me, it's both weight loss and setting time aside to write fiction each day. I write tons of non-fiction for my clients but I have to make myself put my fiction first!

    1. I'm trying to cut back on things that aren't necessarily priorities. Some still need to get done, but not all. I'm hoping that helps clear my mind of "clutter." :)

  8. Yay for Game of Thrones! That is always worth watching. I am still suffering from withdrawal now that S4 has ended. I don't know how to cope LOL.

    1. I know! Every once in awhile I catch myself thinking about the show and the characters - like what's going to happen to so-and-so? What will he or she do now? What was he or she thinking?! Sad, but true. :)

  9. I've started to realise the very same thing. I've a couple of really wasted days, and the worst thing is, I've been aware of wasting my time but tried to justify it anyway. Grrr... I hope to do better , and that quote should help :-)

    1. Oh, yes, that justification. Been there, done that. I hope the quote helps you!

  10. I have wasted quite a few days, so my current WIP has no new words from three days. Madeline, its great to meet another Thai food and brownie lover like me. And yes, the weighing machine does show the effect of bingeing ;)

  11. LOL. But I LIKE hiring people to do the work for me. ;)

I love this. There are far too many people these days who feel entitled and become a waste of space. So sad. I think it's a generational mentality that's slowly dying. Not in my home though. These kids have to work for everything they get. =)

    1. You've got to work for what you want, whether that's money or fame or peace of mind. You might not always get it but at least you know you put the effort in.

  12. It makes me wonder when successful people are described as being lucky because I've heard successful people say that the harder they work, the "luckier" they get. Hard work does not always bring the desired rewards, but that is no reason to give up.

    1. You're right - hard work doesn't always bring the rewards but we won't even get close if we don't at least try. :)

  13. Yes! I could have written this post because it says exactly what I've been thinking. I'm glad I'm not alone....
