"March"-ing On

As I look back over the last few months, I think a little reading and writing review is in order.

Writing -
I know I've said it before but I'm going to say it again - this Write 1 Sub 1 Challenge is amazing! (Go, March Martians!) I think I've written and subbed more in these last three months than I did for most of 2010. But it's not just a matter of quantity; I'm pleased with the quality of what I've done. I'm still waiting to hear back on a lot of the stories but the ones that didn't make the cut the first time around tended to receive personal comments. (For those who don't know, those personal comments are HUGE. Form letters are the norm.)

Now, the novel I'm working on is another story. I don't know if it's jealous of the flash fictions and their ability to be fully formed in a shorter amount of time or what, but the novel is giving me woes.

Reading -

I've already talked about my reading rut on a previous post. Again, I've been reading good books but nothing so far that has grabbed me by the throat and/or heart. I know that book is just waiting on my shelf, just waiting for me to pick it up...

I've been reading books on writing, too, and I always enjoy learning new techniques and getting inside the minds of other writers and seeing how they do things.

How about all of you? How are you doing on your books-to-read list? How's your writing going? Anything exciting you want to share? (If you need to vent or mope, go ahead - we'll commiserate and then cheer you back on.)

  1. My novel feels neglected because of Write1Sub1 in some ways, but I think taking this time away to focus on short fiction is needed. Gives me time to play around with other characters and plots etc. and hopefully I'll be able to breathe some new life into the novel because of it. :D I'm only doing Ray Light, but, man, I think I have more on submission than I did last year already, as well. Go March Martians!

  2. Hi, Sealey - I'm doing Light Ray, too. I can't imagine doing the other version - those are some brave and creative souls. :)

Hmm, maybe my novel does feel neglected... But I like your idea of the short fiction kind of spurring on the novel.

  3. April seems like a good time to take stock of where we are, with the fresh start of Spring. I'm about to begin a revision of a manuscript, the notes are taken and the keyboard awaits!

  6. "I've written and subbed more in these last three months than I did for most of 2010... I'm pleased with the quality of what I've done" -- that's what we @W1S1 like to see! I agree; the stuff I've written this year is some of my best work. Now if only the editors would agree...

  10. Writing? I'm working on a novel-in-progress and have reaching the muddling middle, which is good in that I can see the end in sight! Many rejections in March, which smarts, but I'm still putting work out into the universe. Reading is a perpetual state with me, partly because of the day job. I just finished, The Peach Keeper, by Sarah Addison Allen and loved it. It was just what I needed.

  11. You're doing great, Stacy! Keep going!

I picked up one of her older books based on your recommendation. I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Glad to hear the new one was so good!
