Motivational Monday

IF YOU HAD TO IDENTIFY, IN ONE WORD,
THE REASON WHY THE HUMAN RACE HAS NOT
ACHIEVED, AND NEVER WILL ACHIEVE,
ITS FULL POTENTIAL, THAT WORD WOULD BE
'MEETINGS.'
(Dave Barry)

I have a lot of 'meetings' with myself. I do a lot of thinking, worrying, analyzing, trying to see all sides of an issue, attempting to put myself in this scenario or in that person's shoes. I also do a lot of talking to myself. Whether it's pumping myself up or tearing myself down, there's an awful lot of yapping going on.

And maybe this is part of the reason why I haven't achieved all that I want to achieve. I spend too much thinking and not enough time doing.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a "considerer" at heart. I'm not about to just jump into something without some sort of loose plan. I'm old enough to know this about myself, and smart enough to accept it. But I can certainly put more of my ideas into action. I can give those ideas legs, and breath and energy and a pounding heartbeat and a soaring spirit. I can - and will! - do all of that…as soon as I reschedule that next meeting with myself.

By all means, let's keep checking in with ourselves and making sure we're on the right path, following our dreams, setting goals. But this week, let's also put one of our ideas in motion - make that call, pick up that book, join that club, apply for that job, try that new recipe. Take action!

And speaking of action, I'm taking a blogging break this week to finish preparing for the A-Z Challenge that starts April 1st. I'll be around, but this will probably be my only post this week. Have a good one!

  1. Dave Barry's quote is perfect! One of the major things I don't miss about working is meetings. Enjoy your break--and good luck with the A-Z challenge!

  2. Those are some true words! I admit, I'm cautious and will think things over before doing anything.
Guess we'll both be back in time for the Challenge. Hope you get all your posts done.

    1. I'm all for cautious, but I sometimes talk myself out of things that might be good for me, that might make me stretch and grow or, you know, might be fun. :)

At this point, I'm just hoping to get the first half of the alphabet done before April 1st!

  3. Lol, yes, I've been having a lot of marketing 'meetings' recently. But I keep getting sidetracked by the chocolate digestives.

    1. Now that's what's been missing from my 'meetings' - chocolate! :)

  4. This quote made me laugh because I was thinking of it from a work perspective, but I never thought about all the "meetings" I have with my inner critic that totally drain me. I'm going to remember this next time I start having one of those pesky meetings inside my head.

    1. I'm pretty sure the work perspective is what Barry was referring to, but, to me, it really applies to most meetings. :)

  5. Lots of people taking breaks to get ready for A to Z. I seldom have meetings with myself. I just keep ploughing ahead.

    1. I wish I could plow ahead like you do. I also wish I was as prepared for A-Z as I know you are, Susan. :)

    1. Ha! Maybe you should...but only if you think he or she would get a kick out of it. Not if you might fired. :o

  7. Yay! I was wondering if you'd be playing this year. I hear you with the meetings. I could spend forever talking instead of doing too, but thankfully I'm also a doer. BUT, if not careful, I'll talk myself out of sharing anything I've done. (So what's the point, eh?) Guess that's why I married the man I did, who makes me get out there regardless.

    1. Not only am I participating in A-Z, I'm also one of Alex's Ninja Minions. :)

I think my husband and I have influenced each other over the years - now he considers things a little more than he used to, and I take action a little more quickly than I used to. Sort of. :)

  8. Daydreaming and thinking are good, especially for writers, but sometimes we need to just act! Thanks for the reminder!!! See you at A to Z!

    1. It really is quite the balancing acts sometimes.

      Counting down to A-Z…. :)

  9. I conduct a lot of meetings, too, and it's true that they sometimes keep me from actually doing anything. I'm pleased to announce that last night, however, I put my gavel aside and gave myself free reign to create—with really good results! I need to do that more often. :)

    1. Good for you! And you definitely need to do that more often. :)

  10. Absolutely! Whatever you think you want to do, just do it. You'll never know till you give it a go. See you in April. :-)
